Islanders' Steve Bernier: Appears set to make Isles debut Saturday

Bernier appears set to replace Ryan Strome in Saturday's contest against the Blues, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports. At this point, it's unclear what is wrong with Strome, if anything. What is known, however, is that this will be Bernier's debut with the Islanders following a 32-point campaign with the Devils. The veteran forward will need more consistent playing time before he would merit a hard look in the fantasy realm.

  • Returns to practice

News: Steve Bernier (upper body) returned to practice Thursday, reports Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Steve Bernier is either the fastest healer in history or his original diagnosis was off the mark as he was supposed to be out for up to two weeks, not two days. He is still in a battle to be a bottom six forward for the Islanders.
  • Out up to two weeks with lower-body injury

News: Steve Bernier will miss "up to two weeks" with a lower-body injury, CBS New York reports.
Analysis: Steve Bernier signed a one-year contract with the Islanders on Sept. 17, presumably to fill in as an emergency forward when injuries strike. The 32 points (16 goals and 16 assists) that Bernier posted last season with the Devils tied a career high.
  • Isles Ink Bernier To One-Year Contract

News: Steve Bernier signed a one-year (one-way), $750,000 contract with the Islanders on Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: The Islanders were set to bring Steve Bernier in on a tryout basis for training camp, but after they were able to rid themselves of Michael Grabner and his $3 million cap hit, the team opened up room to formally sign Bernier. The winger, who scored a career-best 16 goals with the Devils last season, isn't expected to see nearly as much run in Brooklyn this year, as the Isles' third and fourth lines already appear fairly solidified. Look for Bernier to serve as an extra forward and enter the lineup primarily when injuries surface.
  • Isles Sign Bernier To PTO

News: Steve Bernier signed a professional tryout contract with the Islanders on Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Coming off a season in which he tallied a career-high 16 goals, it's a bit surprising Steve Bernier wasn't able to earn a guaranteed contract in free agency, but it may have been a byproduct of teams fading his unsustainable 15.0 percent shooting rate. Even so, Bernier could be a viable competitor for a third- or fourth-line role in training camp with the Isles, but perhaps more importantly, he'll give the organization some leverage while they work to negotiate a new contract for restricted free agent Brock Nelson.
  • Bernier Will Not Return To Devils Next Season

News: The Devils will not attempt to re-sign Steve Bernier in the offseason, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Despite tying career bests in goals (16) and assists (16) in 2014-15, the Devils have no interest in re-signing Steve Bernier in the offseason. Although he's only 30 years old, the Devils may be looking to get younger across the board, which means Bernier will be in search of a new team for the 2015-16 campaign. He shouldn't have too much trouble finding a suitor, however, as there are plenty of teams who could use a veteran forward like Bernier who can still put the puck in the net on a semi-regular basis.
  • Bernier Scores Two For Devils

News: Steve Bernier posted his second straight multi-point game Thursday, scoring two goals -- one on the power play -- in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: One heck of a burst at the end of the year here for Steve Bernier, who's now set a new career best with 16 goals and matched his career-high 32 points. He'll get a chance to establish a new career points mark Saturday in the season finale against Florida.
  • Two Points For Devils' Bernier

News: Steve Bernier scored a goal and picked up a power-play assist Tuesday in a loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: With that, Steve Bernier's now hit 30 points for the first time since 2008-09 with Vancouver. It's a nice offensive year by his standards, but his fantasy value remains slender outside of deep leagues.
  • Devils' Bernier Strikes Twice In Win

News: Steve Bernier potted two goals in Friday's win over Buffalo.
Analysis: That's 12 goals and 26 points in 56 games for Steve Bernier, who's been skating on the top line with Adam Henrique and Scott Gomez. While he's producing of late, the 29-year-old rarely shoots the puck, managing just 84 shots on goal all season. He's a decent secondary scorer, but having never surpassed the 15-goal mark in his career, the inconsistent Bernier is valuable in only deeper formats.
  • Devils' Bernier Adds Two More Assists Tuesday

News: Steve Bernier picked up two assists in Tuesday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: Steve Bernier has recorded six assists in his last four games, a rather shocking development from a player who has never tallied more than 32 points in a season. The Devils' desperate need for top-six talent has opened the door for Bernier to earn increased work on scoring lines, and to his credit, he's been able to take advantage thus far. Even so, his modest season totals of 10 goals and 24 points over 52 games still limits his value to deeper formats at this time.
