Analysis: Dustin Penner saw just 8:58 TOI in his return following a one-game absence, turning in a blank scoresheet aside from two blocked shots. With three points in 15 games with the Capitals, he hasn't quite had the impact the team had hoped when they acquired him at the deadline.

    • Capitals' Penner Shuffled To Fourth Line

News: With no points in six games since his arrival in DC and phenom Evgeny Kuznetsov fresh off a three-assist outing on Friday, Dustin Penner spent Saturday's practice with Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson on the team's fourth line, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Dustin Penner has been slow to acclimate to his new surroundings in DC. The demotion to the fourth line does not bode well for his chances to turn things around in the short term. Unless or until he gets to play with the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, star players that he might better complement like he did with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry in Anaheim, Penner is only a viable option in the deepest of leagues.
    • Capitals To Debut Penner On Second Line

News: Dustin Penner skated with Marcus Johansson and Troy Brouwer during Wednesday's morning skate, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dustin Penner figures to debut on the team's second line when the Capitals visit the Flyers on Wednesday night. Although Penner would provide the Capitals the kind of big-body presence to play with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom that they have been missing since the departure of Mike Knuble, head coach Adam Oates is likely trying to find offensive balance with Mikhail Grabovski again sidelined with an ankle injury. Keep an eye on Penner's minutes and linemates in these first few games with the Capitals. If he can make the jump to play with Ovechkin and Backstrom, he could be a steal on the waiver wire.
    • Ducks Trade Penner To Capitals

News: Dustin Penner was traded to the Capitals on Tuesday for a fourth-round draft pick, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Dustin Penner had seen time on just about every line for the Ducks this season, but has managed to stay reasonably productive overall, totaling 13 goals and 19 assists over 49 games. With the move to Washington, he could ultimately earn a spot on the top line with Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, which would make him an attractive waiver-wire pickup. Expect coach Adam Oates to see how Penner fits in after a few practices before he decides where to slot him in the lineup.
