Lightning's Valtteri Filppula: Strikes with late shorthanded winner

Filppula assisted on the Lightning's first goal and scored the game-winner shorthanded with 1:05 remaining in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Rangers. The only times the Bolts were able to do anything offensively were when Filppula got involved on the rush, which a bad turnover by the Rangers on a late power play allowed him to do for his big goal Thursday. The fine effort broke up a five-game skid without a point, while the goal was just his second of the year, so Filppula's got a long way to go before he reestablishes himself as a reliable fantasy option.

Lightning's Valtteri Filppula: Two points in last eight games

Filppula picked up a power-play assist in Thursday's 3-1 loss to Colorado. It was his second point in his last eight games. Ugh. Flip's not scoring and he's on the ice when the other team finds twine (minus-8 in his last eight). And he has just a meagre eight shots in 10 games this season. Filppula is 31 and his game isn't about to take a big step forward, so we wouldn't waste a roster spot right now. Grab him off the wire if he somehow manages to go on a spurt.

Lightning's Valtteri Filppula: Solid start after last season's disappointment

Filppula has three points in Tampa Bay's first four games. It's a nice start after scuffling last season to just 48 points and a minus-14 rating. Filppula's not going to contribute huge shot totals, hits or PIMs, but he's a valuable on-ice contributor, especially in the face-off circle where he's 29-for-52 (55.8 percent).

    • Filppula Scores Lone Bolts' Goal In Game 5

News: Valtteri Filppula scored the lone Tampa Bay goal in Saturday's Game 5 loss to Chicago.
Analysis: Valtteri Filppula now has three points in the Stanley Cup Finals, giving him 14 points in 25 games this postseason. The 31-year-old struck on the power play Saturday -- his second goal with the man advantage this postseason and his fourth tally overall. With just two goals in his last 16 games, Filppula, who had 25 goals in his first season with Tampa Bay in 2013-14, will need to come up big in Game 6 Tuesday if the Lightning hope to live another day.
    • Bolts' Filppula Collects Assist In Game 4

News: Valtteri Filppula assisted on the Lightning's lone goal in Wednesday's Game 4 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Though they were responsible for Tampa's only scoring in Game 4, the trio of Alex Killorn, Steven Stamkos, and Valtteri Filppula have been mostly invisible so far this series, combining for modest totals of two goals, three assists, and 27 SOG over four games. Filppula has probably been the least impactful of the lot throughout the postseason, as he's somehow sitting on a minus-7 rating over 24 games.
    • Bolts' Filppula Pots Game-Winner In Game 5 Sunday

News: Valtteri Filppula scored the game-winning goal in Game 5 Sunday against the Rangers.
Analysis: It was the third goal of the postseason for Valtteri Filppula, who has racked up four points in his last three games. Skating with Steve Stamkos, Filppula is having a decent postseason, notching 10 points in 18 games. He doesn't shoot much, but when he does, it can be lethal. Filppula's struck twice on the power play this postseason and is averaging 20:30 of ice time, making him a reliable scoring option who has helped Tampa Bay grab a 3-2 stranglehold on their series against the Rangers.
    • Bolts' Filppula Tallies Two Helpers In Game 2

News: Valtteri Filppula recorded a pair of assists in Monday's Game 2 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: The two-assist game was Valtteri Filppula's third multi-point effort of the playoffs as he's now up to eight points in the postseason. He started off each of the first two rounds hot, but he failed to work his way onto the scoresheet after Game 2 against both the Red Wings and Canadiens, so he'll look to keep up his production as the series shifts to Tampa on Wednesday.
    • Bolts' Filppula Notches Three Points In Win

News: Valtteri Filppula picked up a power-play goal and two assists in Sunday's Game 2 win over the Canadiens.
Analysis: Valtteri Filppula ended the first round series off the scoresheet, but he's gotten off to a strong start against Montreal as he's recorded four points through the first two games, including Sunday as he tied his season high with three points. He struggled to gather points at the end of the regular season though, so it may be difficult to rely on him for the remainder of the playoffs until he can show more consistent production.
    • Bolts' Filppula Breaks 12-Game Goal Slump

News: Valtteri Filppula scored a goal and added an assist in Saturday's Game 2 win over the Red Wings.
Analysis: He'd gone without a goal for 12 games prior to Saturday and has just two in his last 29. He has taken on a different role for the Bolts this season, especially in the second half, and hasn't been counted on for scoring. But contributions like this will go far as the Bolts push toward June.
    • Bolts' Filppula Still Mired In Slump

News: Valtteri Filppula gathered a power-play assist in Thursday's loss to the Senators.
Analysis: Points have been extremely scarce for Valtteri Filppula of late, as the forward has collected a goal and three assists since the beginning of March. A drop in ice time hasn't accompanied the drop in productivity just yet, but it's tough to justify keeping him active until he starts scoring with more regularity.
