Jason Witten playing, but why?

The Dallas Cowboys announced their inactives, and, surprise of surprises, tight end Jason Witten isn't among them.

OK, so does that mean he plays? NBC, which airs tonight's game, says he will, and I want to know why. I know the Cowboys consider it an important contest, but the guy is recovering from a lacerated spleen, for crying out loud.

Now I know what you're thinking: The Cowboys know a lot more about the guy than you, and you're dead solid perfect. Except it was the Cowboys who listed Witten as "doubtful," meaning he had a 75 percent chance of not playing, so somebody must have thought he wasn't ready.

Yet, 24 hours, he's in the lineup? Sorry, I don't get it. This is a season opener. This is not a playoff game. There are 16 more weeks, and here's hoping the Cowboys ... and Witten ... know what they're doing.
