Report: Mike Holmgren would only coach for Dallas Cowboys

This much is certain: Mike Holmgren won't be the Browns' president after the 2012 season. What happens after that is still to be determined. But there's speculation that Holmgren, who won a Super Bowl with the Packers and made a Super Bowl appearance with the Seahawks, could return to coaching. On Sunday, ESPN's Ed Werder reported (via PFT) that Holmgren would return to the sidelines for only one job: coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Holmgren said last week that he has had contact with the Cowboys, but CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora spoke about the Holmgren-Cowboys dynamic last week.

"Holmgren, who is finishing up a disappointing three-year run as the Browns' team president, has said he would consider a return to coaching, where he already has a case for potential Hall of Fame induction," La Canfora said last Sunday. "Some sources who know Holmgren well believe Dallas is the one potential opening that would truly interest him, given the competitiveness of the roster, the skill players present and his long relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Holmgren and Jones worked closely together for more than a decade on the NFL's Competition Committee. If the perfect scenario does not arise, sources close to Holmgren expect him to retire."

There's a lot to be decided, but Cowboys coach Jason Garrett hasn't quite lived up to his offensive genius label since taking over for Wade Phillips midway through 2010. He's 18-16 in 34 games, and the team hasn't finished over .500 since 2009. The Cowboys currently sit at 5-5 after beating the Browns on Sunday and are one game back of the stumbling Giants in the NFC East.

But barring a second-half run, it's reasonable to assume Garrett's job could be on the line, and that Holmgren could be in that conversation as a potential replacement.
