The visor debate is once again raging in the NHL after Marc Staal of the New York Rangers took a puck square to the eye this week. The debate has stretched so far that Doug Gottlieb and Allie LaForce (what a great name) were going back and forth on CBS Sports Network's Lead Off.
I pretty much side with Gottlieb here. I feel it's at the point where the players should be told they need to wear a visor the same way they were once told they need to wear a helmet.
The biggest issue, one they don't touch on in the quick debate, is fighting. The biggest reason it seems players don't want a universal mandate on visors is in the case of players who fight and the danger shields present. In a fight, it's obviously no good because it's dangerous to your opponent and we don't want to see guys taking off their helmets to fight either because of the dangers of falling and hitting their heads on the ice.
It seems like such an easy solution to say "mandate them," but it's a lot tougher than it seems. So the debate will continue to rage on.
