Report: Cardinals' Jaime Garcia to avoid surgery

By R.J. White | CBSSports.com

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime Garcia has been advised by Dr. James Andrews not to have surgery on his ailing rotator cuff and inflamed shoulder, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.

Garcia will instead begin a rehab program before undergoing a re-evaluation in a few weeks.

According to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, Garcia visited two other doctors but waited to see Andrews before making a final decision regarding surgery.

Garcia was 7-7 with a 3.92 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 98 strikeouts over 121 2/3 innings in 20 starts this year. He pitched just two innings of Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Nationals before being removed from the game because of injury.
