The Cowboys have no other choice but to act fast after learning Sean Lee will be out for the season. The inside linebacker needs toe surgery to repair torn ligaments and has officially been moved to injured reserve.
It was one of several moves the Cowboys made Wednesday. Lee and punter Chris Jones (sprained knee) have been sent to IR, creating two roster spots for veterans. Safety Charlie Peprah and linebacker Ernie Sims have been added to the 53-man roster and could be ready to play Sunday against the Giants, depending on their readiness to learn the system and their conditioning.
Sims, a top-10 draft pick of the Lions in 2006, has played for Philadelphia and Indianapolis the last two years. Peprah started 25 games the last two seasons in Green Bay but has battled through a knee injury that kept him out of the league this offseason and early into the regular season.
Without Lee, the Cowboys will turn to veteran Dan Connor to likely start with Sims and Orie Lemon possibly getting some defensive snaps. With Jones gone to IR, the Cowboys will rely on 10-year veteran Brian Moorman as the punter and holder.
The Cowboys also made a practice-squad swap by cutting wide receiver Raymond Radway and signing linebacker Jerry Brown.
