Chargers Notebook: Takeo Spikes probable, but that is questionable
When a player misses the first two practices of a week, the expectation is he will be listed anywhere from questionable to out. Chargers ILB Takeo Spikes missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but after Spikes fully participated on Friday coach Norv Turner listed him as probable for this Sunday's game against the Jets.
“[Spikes] was able to practice today,” Turner said. “So, hopefully he will be fine and be ready to play.”
Spikes was not likely physically put to the test because practices on Friday are a lot less physically demanding than on Thursday when the team prepares in full pads. Turner also admitted he has eased the physical demands for all players in the past few weeks. “This time of year, practices aren't as physical,” Turner said. “You are trying to take care of some of these guys who are banged up.”
The Chargers (5-9) and the Jets (6-8) have been eliminated from postseason contention. Although both teams profess their desire to win, the last two games provide an opportunity to give a few players an early look for next season.
Backup strong-side ILB Jonas Mouton would see his first significant time on defense if Spikes doesn't play. Mouton has had two strong training camps. Last year, a preseason shoulder injury ended his rookie campaign. Mouton again performed well in preparing for this season, but hasn't been able to contribute on defense.

A second-round pick typically doesn't have to wait until his third season to make an impact. The listing of Spikes may show a lack of confidence in Mouton and that could have a negative impact moving forward.
Three O-line starters return: RT Jeromey Clary, LG Tyronne Green and LT Mike Harris have missed the past two starts, but are expected to play this Sunday. QB Philip Rivers will welcome their return. The Jets' defense has 35 sacks (three-way tie for 10th) and has allowed an average of 191.1 passing yards per game (ranked second).
Injury report: Doubtful: NT Aubrayo Franklin (knee). Questionable: ILB Demorrio Williams (ankle). Probable: RB Ronnie Brown (hamstring), ILB Donald Butler (groin), Clary (knee), Green (hamstring), WR Eddie Royal (hamstring) and Spikes (hamstring).
