Still solid in Penn State pro day
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Defensive tackle Devon Still, a potential first-round draft pick, impressed scouts with his impressive 40 time and lateral ability at the NFL Combine, but didn't believe it was his best performance because of a nagging toe injury.
He gave pro scouts more to think about Thursday at his pro day with a 4.95-second 40-yard dash and also did the short shuttle and L drill.
Still (6-5, 300), battled injuries throughout his Penn State career. He had suffered from a back injury and turf toe late in his senior year but looked healthy at the combine and again at pro day. He doesn't know which teams will be targeting him in next month's draft but is confident he'll be an early pick. NFLDraftScout.com projects Still as a first-round pick.
"I met with about 22 teams at the combine and they all showed real high interest," he said.
--Wide receiver Derek Moye (6-4, 209) turned in a 4.41-second 40, nearly a full tenth of a second faster than his combine time, and also did the three-cone drill, 60-yard shuttle and caught passes from former Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark.
"I think it went really well," Moye said. "I caught the ball well, ran a better 40 time than I did at the combine. I think I did a lot to increase my value."
Moye, a likely mid-round pick, has had trouble adding weight to his slender frame throughout his career but is happy with where he is now (209 pounds) and said he didn't want to change his body type too much before starting his pro career.
--Running back Stephfon Green (5-9, 204) was just happy to be working out for pro scouts, given the events that threatened to derail his pro prospects last summer.
Then Penn State coach Joe Paterno threw Green off the team for disciplinary reasons but allowed him back on the squad after his teammates came to Paterno on Green's behalf.
He put up 17 bench-press reps of 225 pounds, recorded a 33-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 10-inch broad jump at Pro Day. But Green, who said he is willing to play special teams or even defense to try to make an NFL roster, felt he could have made more of an impression.
"I'm my hardest critic," he said. "I just feel like I did mediocre. Nothing that wowed them."
--Cornerback Chaz Powell (6-1, 207) ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.4 range and broad-jumped 10-3, improving his NFL combine stats in both categories.
Powell talked with scouts about the transformation he made from wide receiver to defensive back and was told he could play corner or safety in the NFL.
He said pro day was "a walk in the park" compared to the stress of the combine but was confident about his chances in the draft.
"It's been a great experience," he said. "The next level is tough to make and only the strong survive. I feel like if I stay focused keep working, stay out of trouble, anything can happen."
