Maria Sharapova withdraws from Italian Open with illness

Second-seeded Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Italian Open prior to her quarterfinal match Friday against Sara Errani due to an illness.

"I'm sorry for having to withdraw from the tournament this morning," Sharapova said on Twitter. Didn't recover after being sick last week and it got me again last night."

Sharapova will now have ten days to recover in advance of the French Open, which is set to begin May 26.
