Stampede to see David Beckham in China injures seven

Fans in China eager to catch a glimpse of newly-retired soccer star David Beckham at a Shanghai university Thursday created a stampede, according to the Associated Press.

Beckham was visiting the team at Shanghai Tongji University when nearly 1,000 fans stormed the gate, injuring seven, including three police officers and two university security guards.

"Too crazy," Chu Dan, a Tongji University soccer player, told the AP. "But we didn't expect so many people showing up here -- too many fans of Beckham."

The event was canceled, and police in Shanghai are investigating the incident.
