World No. 2 Maria Sharapova announced through her personal website on Saturday that Jimmy Connors will be her new coach.

The news comes just one day after Sharapova revealed that she and Thomas Hogstedt, her coach of three years, agreed to a mutual split.

“I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach,” she wrote on her site. “I have known Jimmy for many years, and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments.”

Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam winner, has won only one major tournament since 2008 (the 2012 French Open). Her surprising second-round exit at Wimbledon against Michelle Larcher de Brito (131st in singles) might have influenced her decision.

Connors, formerly the coach of Andy Roddick, owns five U.S. Open championships among eight Grand Slam titles.
