Oscar De La Hoya checks into rehab, will miss Alvarez-Mayweather

Former world champion fighter and current boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya announced Tuesday that he has checked into a treatment facility and will be absent from Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez bout.

De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions was instrumental in setting up the fight, which is due to be one of the most lucrative fights in history. Besides that, De La Hoya has taken Alvarez under his wing and served as a protege to the young fighter.

“Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is the ring and mine in treatment,” De La Hoya said in a statement.“I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility.

“I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and longterm recovery from my disease must come first."

De La Hoya has undergone treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic for alcoholism in the past, though the statement did not specify his reason for seeking help this time.
