IndyCar driver Dario Franchitti remained in a Houston hospital on Monday after his car went airborne in a final-lap crash at Sunday's Grand Prix of Houston. The three-car crash left Franchitti with a broken right ankle, two spinal fractures and a concussion, while also injuring a race official and 13 fans.

Franchitti, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, had surgery on Sunday night to stabilize his ankle and is expected to have a second surgery on the ankle once he's flown to Indianapolis in a few days, according to a spokesman from Chip Ganassi Racing.

“Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes,” Franchitti said in a statement through his team. “They mean a lot to me. I'd also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright.”

Most of the 13 fans were treated at the scene, but two were taken to a local hospital. Scott Dixon, one of Franchitti's teammates, and Tony Kanaan visited one of the injured fans.

The accident occurred on the final lap of Sunday's race as Franchitti tried to pass Takuma Sato.

The crash was a sobering moment for the sport as it came just 10 days shy of the two-year anniversary of Dan Wheldon's death at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
