The Sochi Olympic torch has, as is customary, been all over. It has even gone to the North Pole!
But the next endeavor is somewhat more extreme: Russia plans to launch an unlit torch into space.
Here are the details, in short: A torch will launch with a crew early next month, becoming the third torch to reach space. But a few days later it will go on a spacewalk, which no torch has done before.
Officials say there will be live video and photographs of the event.
"Nobody has done this before," Dmitry Chernyshenko, the president of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, said in a statement. "The spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts with the [Olympic torch] will be a historic moment in the history of the Olympic Torch Relay."
After its all said and done, the torch will return to Earth and be present at the Sochi Olympics opening ceremonies.
