Dr. Cate Shanahan, the physician and nutritionist responsible for the Los Angeles Lakers food-supply overhaul, says that we can reprogram our genes with the food we eat. In her book, Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food, Shanahan advocates a return to a "primal" and "ancestral" way of eating, based upon the Four Pillars of World Cuisine: Fresh food, fermentation, meat on the bone, and organ meats.
If animal organs and fermented foods don't tickle your fancy, fear not. There are plenty of ways to put this sound scientific advice to use. You may not be dunking like Durant anytime soon, but by all accounts your jeans--and your genes--will thank you.
