Leland McPhie, 100, to compete in track and field event

The homepage for the USA Masters Track Indoor Championship explains that the event is for competitors between the ages of 30 and 90+. Leland McPhie falls comfortably in that latter category.

McPhie, 100, will be the only one of over 900 athletes to compete in the 100+ age division, and he's entered four events.

"I haven't been training too much," McPhie told the Boston Herald. "I'm hoping to do four events. Two of them I haven't done before but my coach wants me to do it. I'll be the only one in my age group and I can get points for the club. I'm a team player."

A track standout in the '30s in California, McPhie is planning to compete in the high jump, shot put, weight throw, and superweight throw. The World War II veteran endured open heart surgery 10 years ago, but that, clearly, hasn't slowed him a bit.

"My favorite event is the shot put," McPhie told the paper. "I can handle that."

The three-day meet began Friday in Boston.
