Tour de France: Rogers takes stage 16, Nibali holds overall lead

Australian rider Michael Rogers broke away from a few lead cyclists across a five-kilometer descent as he won Tuesday's stage 16 of the Tour de France. The 237.5 kilometer cruise was the longest stage of the Tour.

Despite finishing several minutes back of Rogers, overall leader Vincenzo Nibali maintained his lead (4:37) as he kept pace with his top challengers, Spain's Alejandro Valverde and France's Thibault Pinot, whose 17th-place finish saw him improve his overall standing. The Frenchman's race has him positioned in third place overall. The US's Tejay van Garderen finished 37th and dropped from fifth to sixth place, overall.

“I think a fair bit of joy came out there [after the win], from over the years really,” Rogers said. “I've tried so hard to win a stage of the Tour. … I know I've changed upstairs. I'm more hungry, opportunities seem clearer to me now, and I'm not scared of the outcome anymore. Previously I was scared to try something because I was scared of failure. Once you're not scared of the outcome, opportunities arise.”

Thomas Voeckler, who last week was seen wrecking a heckler in the middle of the race, finished second in Tuesday's march from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon. Wednesday's stage 17 sees the cyclists travel from Saint-Gaudens to Saint-Lary Pla d'Adet.

Also, not sure at what point during Tuesday's race this photo was taken and shared by the Tour's official account, but it was just begging to be shared with the masses.
