Former Chelsea star and Ivory Coast national Didier Drogba is returning to the English Premier League side for what could be the final season of his pro career.

The movehad been rumored to be in the works for a while and on Friday it went through as Drogba made the announcement with a photo on Instagram and an adjoining caption:

So CFC offered me the opportunity to create more history with these guys - how could I say no? Thanks to the club and can't wait to see the fans again!!!! #theimpossible #imback #return #backtoblues #historymakers #cfc #homesweethome

Drogba is certainly past his prime years but Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho said on Thursday this would be much more than a ceremonial signing. From the BBC:

Mourinho said the club were thinking about a deal, but that the decision would be made "in a non-emotional way."

"If I bring him back, and the decision has to be made soon, it is because as a player he has qualities to make the team stronger," he said.

Drogba starred for Chelsea from 2004 through 2012 when he appeared in 226 games with 100 goals scored including 29 in 32 games in 2009-10 and those were just in EPL games. In total he played 241 gamesfor Chelsea with 157 goals.

But the last three seasons he has bounced around and has played just 48 games with Shanghai Shenhua and then Galatasaray in Turkey. He was also named to the Ivorian World Cup team but was used mostly as a substitute.
