Michael Phelps returned to competition on an international level Friday, racing in the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia. Phelps, who announced his retirement after the London Olympics, is looking to qualify for the world championships and, later, the 2016 Olympics.

The 22-time Olympic medalist finished fourth in the 100-meter freestyle, but he was able to make a trip to the podium with his American teammates after winning the 4x200-meter relay.

"Being able to get back on the podium -- it feels amazing," Phelps said, according to the Associated Press. "It's a good first day. Good first international meet back. There's no better way to finish this, lovely, rainy night then being able to step up with your teammates and win a gold medal."

Phelps is scheduled to compete in butterfly and medley events over the weekend.
