Arsenal edges hated rivals for Champions League berth
On the final day of English Premier League play, Arsenal secured the fourth and final berth in the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United. The Gunners finished one point ahead of their bitter North London rivals, Tottenham.
Arsenal made the Champions League for the 16th straight year, beating out their hated North London rivals Tottenham for the fourth and final berth on the last day of English Premier League play.
Visiting Arsenal beat Newcastle United 1-0 on defender Laurent Koscielny’s goal in the 52nd minute. Off Theo Walcott's free kick, Koscielny volleyed it home. That was enough to keep the Gunners one point ahead of the Spurs, who beat Sunderland 1-0.
In other EPL action, Chelsea secured third place with a 2-1 win over Everton and league champion Manchester United said farewell to legendary manager Alex Ferguson with a 5-5 draw against West Bromwich Albion. United blew a 5-2 lead in Ferguson’s finale.
Champions League play begins in September.
