Austria outlasts the USMNT 1-0 in Tuesday's friendly
Another less-than-stellar offensive effort by the Americans.
For the second time in less than a week, the United States Men’s National Team failed to scratch a goal across against an inferior opponent. Austria defeated the Americans 1-0 in Tuesday’s international friendly after the USMNT played to a 0-0 tie against Scotland last Friday.
The Americans appeared to strike first early in the first half when Geoff Cameron's header appeared to cross the goal line before being cleared. To make matters worse, replays clearly show a handball violation in the box by Austria's Marko Arnautovic.
But the referee didn't catch either event, so the game remained scoreless.
Austria later started the scoring in the 33rd minute when Marc Janko buried a cross into the back of the net.
Both sides had several chances in the second half, but no more goals were allowed.
It was another sluggish start for the Americans, but, to be fair, they did manage to generate more chances offensively than they did last week against Scotland. Both Jozy Altidore and Aron Johannsson had solid chances in the first 45 minutes, but neither could convert.
And while this performance was more impressive than last week's, the Americans still looked somewhat mediocre. Of course, they were somewhat short-handed -- Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan stayed back with injuries -- but a more spirited 90-minute effort certainly would have been welcomed.
