DeAndre Yedlin transferring to Tottenham from MLS's Sounders
DeAndre Yedlin piqued the interest of a few European clubs thanks to his standout showing in Brazil, but he's headed to the Premier League.
DeAndre Yedlin is headed to the Premier League after Tottenham Hotspur officially reached a transfer agreement with the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday.
Yedlin, largely an unknown 21-year-old before he burst onto the field in Brazil as a US national team reserve, will stay with the Sounders through the end of the season, and he’s expected to join the English club ahead of next season. The deal is for four years.
Tottenham will pay a $4 million transfer fee, 75 percent of which will go to the Seattle franchise.

Yedlin, a Seattle native, created some massive buzz for himself at this summer’s World Cup. After sitting against Ghana, he subbed on against Portugal and made an immediate impact with a dangerous cross, which facilitated a late goal. He showed strong spurts against Germany and played nearly 90 minutes against Belgium in the knockout round. Though just 5-8, Yedlin’s speed and athleticism were what initially attracted Jurgen Klinsmann to the defender.
“I’ve talked to [Klinsmann] about this move and he supports it, which was one of the big reasons behind the decision,” Yedlin said.
Klinsmann has been a huge proponent of US players facing the best competition in Europe, so it’s no surprise he endorsed the move. Yedlin will be the fourth American to play for Tottenham, and he’s just the latest sign of the ever-improving state of American soccer.
