Manny Pacquiao to take on Chris Algieri in China on Nov. 22
Manny Pacquiao's promoters hashed out a deal to fight 30-year-old Chris Algieri in China later this fall.
Manny Pacquiao will put his WBO welterweight boxing title on the line against Chris Algieri in Macau, China on Nov. 22. The deal, which was finally struck only after some financial specifics were “tweaked” in favor of Algieri, has a rematch clause should Pacquiao lose.
The fight is set for Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macao, the same arena where Pacquiao, 35, handled Brandon Rios last fall.
“We have a deal,” Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said to ESPN. “On my end, it wasn’t a hard deal at all. I came up pretty much with what they were looking for and then [Algieri’s promoters] had to sit down with Algieri and cut it up fairly amongst themselves.”
Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) last defeated Timothy Bradley Jr. in Las Vegas in April to reclaim the welterweight title he had lost to him two years prior.
The specifics weren’t disclosed by either party, but Joe DeGuardia, who reps Algieri, said that the Long Island native would earn more than $1 million from the fight – easily his biggest payday. Algieri (20-0, 8 Kos) earned $100K when he upset Ruslan Provodnikov to earn the junior welterweight title on June 14. Just under a year ago, Algieri, who owns a masters degree, was a relative unknown. His win over Provodnikov at the Barclays Center catapulted his stock.
“I wanted this fight,” Algieri said in a statement. “This will change my life once agains and I welcome the future. All of Team Algieri is excited for this fight.”
