Miguel Cabrera at 30: On pace for a huge career
Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera turned 30 on Thursday. Where do his before-30 numbers stand compared to other stars? Not bad, as it turns out. Cabrera is ahead of Pete Rose's pace for hits and ahead of Derek Jeter's, too.
Two years ago, when Derek Jeter was on the way to his 3,000th hit, I made the point that Jeter was ahead of Pete Rose's pace.
Miguel Cabrera turned 30 on Thursday. Cabrera is ahead of Jeter's pace.
Cabrera is ahead of a lot of paces, and not far behind a lot of others.
According to STATS LLC, Cabrera's 323 home runs before turning 30 rank 11th all-time. Alex Rodriguez tops the list with 409, but Cabrera is only 19 home runs short of where Hank Aaron was at the same age.
Cabrera ranks second with 388 doubles (behind Joe Medwick's 416). STATS LLC's records are incomplete before 1921, but since then, Cabrera's 1,140 RBI rank sixth (behind Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Lou Gehrig, Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr.).
And that hit list?
While the records are incomplete, it seems Ty Cobb's 2,136 hits were the most ever before turning 30. Cabrera wouldn't make the top 10, but his 1,822 hits put him ahead of both Jeter (1,619) and Rose (1,547). Cabrera finished just three hits behind A-Rod's 1,825, and 15 behind Al Kaline's 1,837.
While Cabrera is ahead of the pace set by Rose and Jeter, he's behind the pace of at least four hitters who never ended up reaching 3,000 hits (Ott, Vada Pinson, Foxx and Medwick).
