Oscar Pistorius involved in nightclub altercation in midst of murder trial
With his murder trial on break before closing arguments, South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius was involved in a nightclub altercation over the weekend.
In the midst of a murder trial, South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius was involved in an altercation at a Johannesburg night club over the weekend.
Pistorius faces a murder charge for shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a shooting which the defense claims was a case of mistaken identity and was made in self defense. With the trial on break before closing arguments, Pistorius hit the town where he found himself in a skirmish with another club-goer.
The details of the incident come courtesy of the Associated Press:
Pistorius went with a cousin to a trendy Johannesburg nightclub on Saturday, where he was accosted by a man who aggressively questioned him about his murder trial, his family said Tuesday. The man gave a different version, saying the double-amputee runner was drunk, insulted his friends and the family of President Jacob Zuma and poked him in the chest, according to Johannesburg's The Star newspaper.
What actually happened remains a disputed point, but the fact the skirmish took place isn't in dispute and that's about the last thing the Pistorius defense wants to deal with at the moment.
A spokeswoman for the Pistorius family, Anneliese Burgess, further explained Pistorius' side and acknowledged regret for Pistorius this happened.
"The individual, according to my client, started to aggressively interrogate him on matters relating to the trial. An argument ensued during which my client asked to be left alone," she said in a statement. "Oscar soon thereafter left the club with his cousin. My client regrets the decision to go to a public space and thereby inviting unwelcome attention."
The arguments for both sides in the trial have been made and now they await closing arguments on August 7-8 so this incident shouldn't have an impact on the trial, but it's possible it could play a role in any potential sentencing hearing.
