Oscar Pistorius testifies as murder trial continues after delay
For the first time since the trial started in early March, Oscar Pistorius took the stand to defend himself in the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp.
The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius reconvened Monday after a week-long hiatus, and the double-amputee sprinter took the stand and tearfully recounted the events that led to the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
First, though, Pistorius apologized to Steenkamp's family.
"I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. and Mrs. Steenkamp, to Reeva’s family," a weeping Pistorius said, according to reports. "To those of you who knew her who are in court today.
"There hasn’t been a moment I haven’t thought about this tragedy. I was simply trying to protect Reeva. I can promise you when she went to bed that night she felt loved. I’ve tried to put my feelings in words to you several times, but no words ever sufficed."
There is no question that Pistorius shot Steenkamp, but he claims the shooting was due to a case of mistaken identity. Furthermore, Pistorius is citing the fact that he is a double-amputee as reason why he feels more vulnerable than most.
Now under the threat of cross-examination, Pistorius' legal team told the Associated Press that, in effect, the decision will hinge on his testimony.
Court has been adjourned until Tuesday, however, after the judge allowed a sleepless Pistorius a break from testifying.
"The weight of this is extremely overbearing," Pistorius said, in asking the judge to adjourn court early.
Though cameras are allowed in the court room, Pistorius has asked that his testimony not be shown.
