Report: Landon Donovan will sign multi-year deal with LA Galaxy
Landon Donovan has agreed to a multi-year deal with the LA Galaxy, according to Sports Illustrated, as the team attempts to become the first franchise to win three straight titles.
Landon Donovan, whose five MLS Cup titles are the most all-time, reached a deal on a new, multi-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported.
The team is expected to make the announcement on Wednesday.
Donovan, 31, was in the final year of his contract, playing out what has been a highly transitional season for him. The US men’s national team star took a three-month sabbatical earlier in the year, and there were questions whether the striker still had a drive for the game.
But he returned to lead the US team to a Gold Cup championship this summer, reassuming his place as the team’s primary scorer and facilitator. He’s also been a force recently in this his ninth season with the Galaxy, scoring three goals in the last four games.
His new contract should also see him become the all-time leading goal-scorer in MLS history, as he sits just three behind Jeff Cunningham, the record-holder with 134.
As Wahl noted, Donovan’s contract is the latest example of yet another national-team player who feels comfortable enough with the ever-growing quality of play within the MLS to re-sign there. Forward Clint Dempsey recently made the leap as well.
Donovan and the Galaxy (12-9-4) are currently in second place in the Western Conference, angling to become the first team to win the MLS cup in three consecutive seasons.
