Skating legend Evgeni Plushenko retires following warmups injury
The face of the Russians in these Sochi Games suffered an injury in warmups that have prevented his participation.
Evgeni Plushenko, a four-time medal-winner in the Olympics, will not have a chance to win gold in the men's individual event in Sochi.
This is a headline here in the States, but massive news over in Russia, his home country.
The beloved 31-year-old skater was forced to pull out of the event before the finals at the last moment due to back issues.
If "felt like a knife in my back," Plushenko said afterward of his warmups injury.
He then announced his retirement, a career coming to an end that's one of the best in the history of men's figure skating.
Plushenko won his second gold earlier this week as part of the team competition. He won gold in the individual men's event at 2006 in Turin, Italy.
