Strange start to Breeders' Cup results in horse dying, DQ

The Breeders' Cup got off to rough start the second day when a horse was euthanized after the first race, the Juvenile Fillies -- a race won by Ria Antonia via disqualification -- at Santa Anita at Arcadia, Calif.

Secret Compass, a 2-year-old filly, suffered a condylar fracture during the race and had to be put down.

"Secret Compass sustained a lateral condylar fracture with dislocation, which is an injury we can't bring them back from because when they dislocate on the track, they lose their blood supply, so she has been euthanized," said Wayne McIlwraith, the on-call veterinarian.

John Velasquez, Secret Compass' jockey who also was injured during the race, underwent surgery to remove his injured spleen at Huntington Memorial Hospital, track officials reported.
