Want to play English pro soccer? Just pony up $30K
A cash-strapped British soccer club will sign one of its supporters and play him in a league game -- if that fan comes up with $30,000.
Want to be a professional athlete, but aren’t good enough? (We know the feeling).
Well, a cash-strapped British soccer club is loosening the requirements for making its team. The Macclesfield Town Football Club will sign any fit male 18-35 who’s willing to pony up 20,000 English pounds -- or $30,000.
Team officials insist the player will be a real team member. He’ll get a full uniform, train with the club and be guaranteed at least 10 minutes of playing time in a league game.
“If we are 3-0 up with 10 minutes to go, that would be a good opportunity for [manager] John [Askey] to utilize the situation," associate director Andy Scott told London's Telegraph. “There’s absolutely no way we would do it unless it was the right moment in the right game.”
Added Askey: “What we don’t want is for it to become farcical, but I don’t think it will hinder or restrict the team. Far from it.”
Macclesfield, which plays in the fifth tier of English soccer, reportedly needs to raise $150,000 in the next two months to avoid folding.
