Witnesses: Oscar Pistorius was 'torn apart' after shooting girlfriend
Neighbors describe a dejected Oscar Pistorius the night he shot his girlfriend to death.
Neighbors of Oscar Pistorius testified Monday that the double-amputee sprinter was a broken man the night he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
According to the New York Times, one witness described a pleading Pistorius carrying Steenkamp's body and saying, "stay with me, my love, stay with me."
Pistorius' neighbor, Johan Stander, recounted a desperate phone call from Pistorius just after the shooting.
"I received a call from Mr. Pistorius and he said on the call, 'Johan, please, please, come to my house, please. I shot Reeva. I thought she was an intruder. Please come quick,'" Stander said. "He was crying. He was really crying. He was in pain.
"He’s asking God to help him. He was torn apart, broken, desperate, pleading."
Pistorius and his defense team have maintained that the sprinter fired on Steenkamp in error, believing her to be an intruder. Prosecutors believe he is lying and that he killed Steenkamp on purpose.
On Monday, prosecutor Gerrie Nel tried to discount Stander's story, asking his if he were a friend of Pistorius' and just trying to help the defense.
"I'm here to give the truth," Stander said, according to the Associated Press. "And I think I've given the truth. What I saw that morning."
Stander went on to describe what he saw when he arrived at Pistorius' home that night.
"It's not something I would like to experience again, my lady," Stander told the judge. "Because that young man walking down the stairs with the lady, with a young woman. His face. The expression of pain, the expression of sorrow. And he's crying."
If convicted, Pistorius could face 25 years in prison. The trial, which had been in recess the past two weeks, is scheduled to end May 16.
