Aug. 2--Mavericks forward Josh Howard was arrested Thursday night in hishometown of Winston-Salem, N.C., after police said he was street racing.
Howard is charged with reckless driving and with speed competition -- thelegal term for drag racing -- after police said he was going 94 mph in a 55mph zone. He was released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise toappear in court Sept. 23.
The Mavericks had no comment on the incident. A message left withHoward's agent was not returned.
A police officer saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen speeding alongU.S. 421 in Winston-Salem late Thursday night. Howard was identified as thedriver of the Lexus. Authorities did not identify the other driver.
Howard has been a controversial figure since talking about his off-seasonmarijuana use in a radio interview before Game 3 of the Mavs' playoff seriesagainst the New Orleans Hornets in April. According to sources, after theMavericks lost Game 4 of the series, Howard passed out fliers inviting histeammates to his birthday party at a nightclub that evening.
The Mavericks recently turned down an offer from the Sacramento Kings totrade Howard for Ron Artest, according to a source. Artest has since beentraded to the Houston Rockets.
The alleged street racing happened in the same state where Charlotte Hornets guard Bobby Phills died in a similar incident on Jan. 12, 2000.
