Dallas Cowboys QB Romo's hot start slowed by turnovers

Sep. 25--IRVING -- Tony Romo has gotten off to the kind of start expected of a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, with five touchdown passes this season. But it could have been even better.

Romo threw interceptions in the end zone at Cleveland and Green Bay. He also fumbled at the Packers 19, forcing the Cowboys to settle for a field goal attempt to close the first half.

"You just look at it and learn from it," Romo said. "I'm no different from anybody ... I'd like to think I'm a quick learner, so I'd like to think there won't be quite as many [turnovers] in the future."

The Cowboys have scored touchdowns on seven of 13 possessions inside their opponents' 20-yard line this season (53.8 percent), not far off last season's percentage (30-of-55, 54.5 percent).

"You want to come away with points, but we're going to try and keep giving ourselves opportunities down there," offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said.

Spencer back: Outside linebacker Anthony Spencer was back at practice Wednesday. He didn't play at Green Bay because of soreness in his right knee.

Spencer had surgery during the preseason and missed the opener before making two tackles against Philadelphia in Week 2. Without Spencer, outside linebacker Greg Ellis and DeMarcus Ware got no rest against the Packers.

"We're going to get 39, 40, 50 passes thrown against us if we're winning, and those guys are going to get worn down," coach Wade Phillips said. "When you ask them to play as hard as they can play, like DeMarcus plays every play, I don't think it's physically possible to rush 39 times, or 18 times in a row, when you get them behind. Having a sub for those guys will help them."

All hands on deck: The Cowboys expect to have their full set of receivers for the first time Sunday, with Sam Hurd available after missing the first three games because of an ankle injury.

Hurd fully participated in practice for the first time since suffering the injury. But the Cowboys might have a difficult time dressing five receivers because of issues elsewhere. Phillips said Miles Austin and Hurd will split the No. 3 receiver job because they are involved in different packages.

Briefly: Cory Procter will start in place of injured Kyle Kosier (foot) at left guard, but Phillips said Montrae Holland, picked up in a trade from Denver, got some first-team snaps in practice. ... Nose tackle Tank Johnson was limited in practice with a sprained ankle, but told Phillips it was "getting better hour by hour." ... Fullback Deon Anderson is expected to get the staples removed from his surgically repaired left knee.
