ATLANTA -- Education Secretary Arne Duncan criticized what he called "renegade" college coaches, and says college basketball is hurt by players who enter the NBA after only one season.
Duncan also praised college sports for developing leaders during his keynote speech at the NCAA convention Thursday. But he said he's troubled by the recent firings of college football coaches for mistreatment of players, and coaches who move to new jobs while their former schools are being investigated for violations.
Duncan said the NCAA should not allow a few bad coaches to taint the organization.
A former basketball player at Harvard, Duncan said coaches who don't graduate a certain percentage of players should face more harsh penalties. He also said basketball players should have to remain in college two or three years before entering the NBA.
