ATHENS, Greece -- Panathinaikos players were chased off the pitch by their own fans after a stunning 1-0 loss to newcomer Volos in the Greek league on Saturday.

Enraged Panathinaikos supporters invaded the field at the final whistle at Olympic Stadium in Athens, chasing their own players into the locker room and throwing projectiles at them. They also attacked the VIP stands, causing widespread damage.

Vicente Monje scored in the second half to give Volos the win and leave Panathinaikos two points behind league leader Olympiakos, which plays at last-place Larissa on Sunday.

Also, Ergotelis beat Panserraikos 2-0, Kavala and Atromitos drew 1-1, and Panionios and Asteras played to a scoreless draw.

Volos threatened to score first in the 16th minute when Monje made a through-pass to Juan Martin, who shot from the edge of the area just wide of Alexandros Tzorvas' left post.

Four minutes later, Volos goalie Eldin Jakupovic leapt high to push a powerful short by Giourkas Seitaridis over the crossbar.

In the second half, Volos defended well and not only frustrated Panathinaikos' attempts to score but also proved more dangerous in its few counterattacks

In the 63rd, Martin dribbled past Jean-Alain Boumsong and shot but Tzorvas dived to his right and saved. He was not so lucky in the 78th, when Umbides' cross from the right veered toward goal. Tzorvas parried the ball, but it fell into Monje's path and he scored from close range despite Seitaridis trying to stop him.

In the 89th, Mario Breska's long-range shot went just wide of Tzorvas' right post.

A minute later, Seitaridis' long lob from the right went just over the crossbar. It was Panathinaikos' only major chance in the second half.

Panathinaikos fans had already been restive following last Sunday's unimpressive 0-0 draw at Asteras. Before the game they had installed a banner that read "We are jobless and you wallow in luxury. Respect (the team symbols), patience is running thin." Booing by the 20,000 attending fans started early in the second half and reached fever pitch after Volos' goal.

On Sunday it's Aris vs. Xanthi, Kerkyra vs. PAOK and Iraklis vs. AEK.
