Italian league sticks with late August kickoff

MILAN (AP) -Next season's Italian league will kick off in late August as usual, despite calls from the Players' Association to begin earlier.

Club presidents settled on a Serie A kickoff for the weekend of Aug. 25-26 at a league meeting Monday.

Players' Association president Damiano Tommasi recently proposed an earlier start to avoid matches in the winter months, with several games this season postponed due to snow. But the clubs preferred to stick with their lucrative preseason trips and friendlies.

Next season will include three midweek rounds - Sept. 26, Oct. 31 and May 8 - and the holiday break will last from Dec. 23 to Jan. 5.
