VILLARREAL, Spain (AP) -Villarreal says striker Giuseppe Rossi has re-injured his right knee and will need six months to recover, ending his hopes of playing for Italy at this summer's European Championship.
The Spanish club says Rossi aggravated the ligament injury during Friday's training session and will require surgery for the second time in six months.
Rossi has been sidelined since October and Villarreal has struggled in his absence, sitting 17th in the league and bowing out of the Champions League after losing all six group games.
The 25-year-old New Jersey-born forward scored 32 goals in all competitions for Villarreal last season and has scored six goals in 27 appearances for the Italian national team.
Italy opens Euro 2012 on June 10 against defending champion Spain.
