Stuttgart earns 4-1 win over Bremen in Bundesliga

BERLIN (AP) -Stuttgart outclassed Werder Bremen in a 4-1 win on Friday that consolidates fifth place in the Bundesliga and boosts its chances of clinching a European spot.

Martin Harnik scored twice against his former side as Stuttgart came from behind to win for the third game in a row.

"Today I was there, where you need to be to score the goals," Harnik said after what he called "a highly deserved win."

The visitors scored in the 25th minute when Marko Marin floated a cross for the unmarked Markus Rosenberg to claim his ninth goal of the season.

Stuttgart deservedly equalized 12 minutes later when Christian Gentner curled a fantastic strike from over 20 meters (yards) inside the top right corner.

Tim Wiese saved Georg Niedermeier's header from a corner, but Harnik reacted first to put Stuttgart ahead just before the interval.

The Austrian striker claimed his 17th of the season eight minutes into the second half, again from close range after a corner.

Cacau completed the scoring with a header in the 89th, as Stuttgart stretched its unbeaten run to nine games - including seven wins.

Injury-plagued Werder, in contrast, has only one win from that time and remains eighth before the weekend's games.

"The calmness is missing in games, the consistency is missing, because we've had to make so many changes to our team," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf.
