George Huguely V, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player, was sentenced to 23 years for murdering Yeardley Love in 2010.
Huguely and Love were well-known and talented lacrosse players at Virginia. In February, a Charlottesville, Va., jury convicted Huguely of second-degree murder in Love's death.
An autopsy ruled Love died of blunt-force trauma to the head.
She was discovered at her off-campus apartment face down in a bloody pillow on May 3, 2010. The jury, which recommended a 26-year sentence, also convicted Huguely of stealing Love's computer as he left her apartment that night. He was arrested early that morning.
Both students were to graduate that month.
Huguely confessed to kicking through Love's bedroom door and shaking her violently but told police he left while she was still alive, but bleeding.
