MILAN (AP) -Three-time winner Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3 in a thrilling Europa League opener in Switzerland on Thursday, while defending champion Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win at Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
Substitute Jonjo Shelvey scored Liverpool's fourth goal 10 minutes after coming off the bench, before sealing the result two minutes from time. Teenager Andre Wisdom scored Liverpool's second goal on his debut, after an own goal by Juhani Ojala had given the Premier League side an early lead.
Sebastian Coates added Liverpool's other goal in his first European match.
Raphael Nuzzolo, Ojala and Gonzalo Zarate found the net for Young Boys, which briefly led in the second half.
In Israel, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Costa and Raul Garcia all scored as Atletico made easy work of Hapoel, despite playing without star striker Radamel Falcao, who was rested for the Group B opener.
French league leader Marseille had no such luck and had to score twice in the final eight minutes to rescue a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce. Marseille, which has won all five of its league games this season, seemed to be heading for a surpise defeat following goals from Caner Erkin and Alex.
However, Mathieu Valbuena pulled one back for the Ligue 1 side eight minutes from time before Andre Ayew sent the vociferous home fans into despair with the final kick of the game.
Udinese also snatched a 1-1 draw late on as Antonio Di Natale's stoppage-time strike rescued a point for the Serie A side against big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.
Lacina Traore had given Anzhi a halftime lead.
Elsewhere, Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win over AIK Stockholm. Edu Vargas scored a hat-trick for Napoli - his first goals for the club.
Napoli's Marek Hamsik was sent off in the closing stages but there was still time for Blerim Dzemaili to add a fourth.
