Levski Sofia fined for fans' racist abuse

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -UEFA has fined Bulgarian club Levski Sofia ?30,000 ($39,000) for racist abuse by their fans at a Europe League match against the Bosnian team of Sarajevo.

Levski said in a statement on Friday that UEFA imposed the fine for "improper conduct and racist behavior of the fans" during the July 19 match. Levski won 1-0, before losing the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

During the game, Levski fans raised an insulting banner praising the actions of Serb military commanders against Muslims in the war in Bosnia in the 1990s.

In a statement on its website, Levski called on its fans to behave to avoid new sanctions in future, stressing the club is responsible for "all of their extreme or irrational actions."
