Former Man City manager John Bond dies aged 79

LONDON (AP) -Former Manchester City manager John Bond, who led the team to its last cup final before a 30-year slump, has died. He was 79.

The death of the former West Ham defender was announced Wednesday by the League Managers Association, although no date or cause was given.

After establishing himself as one of English football's most colorful characters during seven years as Norwich manager, Bond took charge at Man City from 1980-83.

His side lost the 1981 FA Cup final in a replay after a memorable solo winner from Tottenham's Ricky Villa.

City didn't reach another FA Cup final until Roberto Mancini ended the club's 35-year trophy drought in 2011.

LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson says Bond "was a real character with a great sense of humor and presence."
