In front of a record crowd of more than 66,452 at Seattle, Eddie Johnson scored his 14th goal of the season to extend the Sounders' lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute, just minutes after an Portland own goal. Fredy Montero added another in the 62nd.
Seattle moved into third-place in the Western Conference, two points clear of fourth-place Los Angeles.
