BERLIN (AP) -Defending champion Borussia Dortmund progressed to the third round of the German Cup with a 4-1 win at second-division Aalen on Tuesday.
Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer scored in the first half, with Mario Goetze and substitute Julian Schieber adding two more in the second. Michael Klauss scored Aalen's late consolation with a free kick.
"I was expecting a really tough game and that we would have problems if we didn't give it our full attention," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.
Aalen coach Ralf Hasenhuettl said there was no shame in losing to a team that beat Real Madrid in the Champions League last week.
"If Real Madrid can lose 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund, we're allowed to lose 4-1," he said.
Ibrahim Afellay, Ciprian Marica and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in Schalke's 3-0 win at home over Sandhausen, another second-division side.
"We wanted to reach the third round, we've done that," said Schalke coach Huub Stevens. "We're through, so we're happy."
Bundesliga sides Freiburg and Mainz beat second-division teams Eintracht Braunschweig and Erzgebirge Aue, respectively, 2-0.
Augsburg won 1-0 at third-tier Preussen Muenster, which knocked out Werder Bremen in the first round.
Fourth-tier side Wormatia Worms, which eliminated Hertha Berlin, came agonizingly close to another upset but lost 4-3 to second division Cologne on penalties after a scoreless 120 minutes.
"When you score four goals away from home, you really should win the game," joked Cologne coach Holger Stanislawski.
Second-division side 1860 Munich won 3-0 at fourth-tier Berliner AK, a multicultural German-Turkish club which caused a sensation by beating Hoffenheim 4-0 in the first round.
Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was due to attend the game but had to cancel due to mounting commitments.
Fourth-tier Havelse lost 3-1 to visiting Bochum, a second-division side.
Last year's beaten finalist, Bayern Munich, hosts Kaiserslautern on Wednesday, when Bundesliga rivals Fortuna Duesseldorf and Borussia Moenchengladbach meet in a Rhine derby.
