Wigan beats Tottenham 1-0 in Premier League

LONDON (AP) -Tottenham was jeered off the field after a surprising 1-0 home loss to Wigan made the team lose touch with the English Premier League frontrunners on Saturday.

Ben Watson scored his first league goal in almost a year to give Wigan a deserved victory at White Hart Lane, turning in a ball from Shaun Maloney from close range in the 56th minute.

Tottenham enjoyed the bulk of the possession for much of the second half but could not find an equalizer.

"It was an awful day. We didn't perform from minute one to minute 95. It was just a lackluster performance," Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel said.

The result gave Wigan just its third victory over Spurs in 16 meetings, and lifted Roberto Martinez's side to 12th in the standings.

Tottenham, which failed to score in a league match for the first time this season, dropped to fifth - nine points behind leader Manchester United - ahead of matches against Manchester City and Arsenal.

"Wigan deserve credit, they had good organization, defensively and offensively - they were better than us today," said Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas, who was booed by sections of the crowd during the game. "It was our worst performance of the season."
