Wolfsburg beats Leverkusen 3-1 in Bundesliga

BERLIN (AP) -Wolfsburg secured its first Bundesliga win at home this season with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Brazilian playmaker Diego opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a free kick from a central position, and he made it 2-0 in the 16th, when Bas Dost teed the ball up for the Brazilian to shoot inside the left post.

The home side kept pouring forward and Marcel Schaefer crossed to give Dost an easy finish in the 33rd.

Dost may have scored a second late in the game, but was denied by a fine reflex save by Michael Rensing, playing in place of the injured Bernd Leno.

Stefan Kiessling then rounded Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio to pull one back in injury time, but it wasn't enough to prevent Leverkusen's seven-game unbeaten run coming to an end.

Diego made a point of running to celebrate his first goal with Wolfsburg's interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner, who has overseen three wins from four games in all competitions since the club parted ways with Felix Magath on Oct. 25.

"I think we have a very good team. We have to go step by step," Diego said. "We're on the right path."

Later, Stuttgart hosted Hannover, and Borussia Moenchengladbach visited Greuther Fuerth.
