Palmeiras nears demotion after draw with Flamengo

SAO PAULO (AP) -Palmeiras moved closer to relegation for the second time in 10 years after conceding a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Flamengo on Sunday.

Fluminense, meanwhile, celebrated the title it clinched a week ago, receiving the league trophy in front of its home fans in Rio de Janeiro despite a 2-0 loss to Cruzeiro at Engenhao stadium.

Palmeiras, the team with the most national titles and the defending Brazilian Cup champion, will keep alive its hopes of avoiding demotion only if Portuguesa loses to second-place Gremio at home later Sunday.

The eight-time champions needed to beat Flamengo in Volta Redonda, but former Palmeiras player Vagner Love scored in the 89th minute with a shot that deflected off a defender before going into the net.
