Alabama's Kirby Smart next million-dollar coordinator

Alabama's compensation committee is expected to approve a raise for Kirby Smart on Tuesday that pushes the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator over the $1 million annual mark, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Smart earned $950,000 last year and garnered head-coaching interest from Auburn and Arkansas.

The source said Smart's new deal is close or comparable to LSU's John Chavis, whose three-year deal last April included an average salary of $1.1 million.

The committee will alter coach Nick Saban's bonus package but will not increase his annual salary, the source said, in part because Saban didn't ask for a raise. The new bonus structure will accommodate the change from the BCS to the college football playoff in 2014-15.
